Infants' teleological and belief inference: A recurrent connectionist approach to their minimal representational and computational requirements

چکیده

This paper explores the minimal representational and processing requirements for teleological and mentalistic inferences. These inferences are already present in 6- to 12-month-old infants when they judge the goals of moving agents like inanimate shapes, without any cue about human body motion. This precludes the mirror system as a potential explanation for these early inferences. I propose a recurrent connectionist network that represents a spatial grid in which objects are moving along trajectories that avoid potential obstacles. This network can simulate young infants' (a) teleological sensitivity to goals and obstacles blocking these goals, as well as their (b) mentalizing sensitivity, like attributing to an individual a false belief that differs from the child's reality. The model demonstrates how infants choose the most rational or efficient way through the grid towards the goal, a rational choice that emerges from prior familiarization with and generalization from trajectories and situational obstacles. In addition, mentalizing is accomplished by explicitly representing in the network an individual who watches (or not) where an object moves and keeping track of this individual's experiences and knowledge. This model helps to clarify that these rudimentary characteristics seem to be essential ingredients for an early teleological and mentalizing system.

A Computational Developmental Model of the Implicit False Belief Task

Do children understand that others have mental representations, for instance, mental representations of an object’s location? This understanding, known as a representational Theory of Mind (ToM) has typically been studied using false-belief (FB) tasks. Standard, verbal FB tasks test whether a child can use protagonists’ beliefs to say that they will search for objects where they last saw them. ...

Computational modeling of dynamic decision making using connectionist networks

In this research connectionist modeling of decision making has been presented. Important areas for decision making in the brain are thalamus, prefrontal cortex and Amygdala. Connectionist modeling with 3 parts representative for these 3 areas is made based the result of Iowa Gambling Task. In many researches Iowa Gambling Task is used to study emotional decision making. In these kind of decisio...

On ‎T‎he Fractional Minimal Cost Flow Problem of a Belief Degree Based Uncertain Network‎

A fractional minimal cost flow problem under linear type belief degree based uncertainty is studied for the first time. This type of uncertainty is useful when no historical information of an uncertain event is available. The problem is crisped using an uncertain chance-constrained programming approach and its non-linear objective function is linearized by a variable changing approach. An illus...

1 Dynamics or Representational Epicycles ?

The stated objective of Cognitive Dynamics is to defend the representational/ computational theory (R/CT) in cognitive science against various criticisms. Starting from the view that R/CT is the best theory we have, the book attempts to meet the challenges posed by cognitive dynamics, embodied cognition, and situated action to convince the reader that these issues can be handled by R/CT. The au...

Teleological Reasoning about Nature: Intentional or Relational

According to the theory of ‘promiscuous teleology’, we are naturally biased to (mistakenly) construe natural kinds as if they (like artifacts) were intentionally designed ‘for a purpose’. However, this theory introduces two paradoxes. First, if infants readily distinguish natural kinds from artifacts, as evidence suggests, why do school-aged children erroneously conflate this distinction? Secon...
